How Internal Auditing Supports Governance

Independent auditing of best practice systems

ISO internal audits provide senior leaders with independent insight into how management systems perform against recognised best-practice standards and whether they operate as intended.


ISO standards, including ISO 45001, are voluntary frameworks that organisations may adopt to structure, monitor and improve management system performance. An ISO internal audit provides an independent assessment by examining documented ISO requirements and how those requirements are applied in practice.


Where broader visibility of legal alignment, system ownership and leadership accountability is required, a WHS Gap Analysis and Governance Review may provide a more appropriate starting point. This review can consider ISO alignment where relevant, while also examining governance arrangements, legal requirements and overall system effectiveness.


ISO internal auditing may then be used as a targeted review activity to assess conformance with specific ISO requirements where standard-based review is required.

Independent Review Supporting Governance Oversight

We primarily conduct ISO internal audits against ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, with ISO 9001 Quality Management System audits undertaken where required to support integrated management systems or contractual requirements. Audits are conducted independently by our qualified and experienced ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 auditor. 


ISO 45001 internal auditing provides structured, independent testing of how work health and safety risks are managed within the standard's framework. This includes examining whether risk identification, control measures, monitoring, and review processes are implemented as described and operating consistently across the organisation.


For senior leaders, ISO internal auditing provides:

  • Independent insight into management system performance against ISO requirements


  • Understanding of how risk management processes operate in practice


  • Evidence to support client, stakeholder, or governance oversight needs 


  • Insight to inform risk-based improvement priorities 

  

  • Independent review of arrangements where ISO alignment is relied upon.
     

This review supports informed decision-making while remaining appropriately bounded to the scope of the ISO standard.

Audit Scope and Approach

ISO internal audits are scoped to reflect the organisation’s operating context, risk profile, and needs. This approach applies to both ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 internal audits.


Audit scope may include review of:

  • Management system structure, roles, and responsibilities


  • Risk identification and control processes required by the applicable ISO standard


  • Consultation, communication, and participation arrangements


  • Incident management, corrective actions, and system learning


  • Monitoring, review, and continual improvement processes


Audits are conducted independently and with professional judgement, focusing on system performance against ISO requirements. Findings are documented clearly, with prioritised observations and practical recommendations aligned to organisational risk significance and governance oversight.

ISO 9001 Quality Management System Internal Audits

ISO 9001 internal audits are available where quality management systems form part of an integrated management system or are required to support contractual or client review requirements.


While ISO 9001 auditing is not the primary focus of this service, it may be undertaken where quality and WHS systems intersect, and independent assessment against both standards is required.
